The Counts of Melgueil
The county of Melgueil was founded on a vast territory. It extended from Balaruc in the west, to Ganges in the north and Lunel in the east.
In addition to exercising secular power, the counts also controlled the appointment of the bishops of Maguelone in the 10th and 11th centuries, with Count Bernard de Melgueil even appointing his son Peter as bishop of Maguelone at the end of the 10th century.
The family of the Counts of Melgueil continued to rule the county until the 1170s. In 1172, Beatrix Countess of Melgueil married her daughter to the future Raymond VI of Toulouse. From then on, the county of Melgueil was intertwined with the powerful county of Toulouse.
This house, a part of the castle classified as a Historic Monument, contains a monumental fireplace. It consists of a mantel and a range hood decorated with rich iconography and moulded cornices in gypsum. Study of the mantel has dated it to the 19th century.
Its rich iconography displays garlands of oak leaves with acorns and ribbons surmounted by a figure. Two eagles carrying a basket of fruit, flowers and vine leaves can be seen on the range hood.
